Internet and e-commerce companies emerged top paymasters in the current placement season at the Cochin University of Science and Technology (Cusat) and Model Engineering College here under the Institute of Human Resource Development.

Domestic e-commerce firm Snapdeal made the biggest offer at the recruitment held at Cusat when it offered two students an annual pay package of Rs. 15.2 lakh.

The country’s biggest e-commerce firm Flipkart offered a pay packet of Rs. 10 lakh to another student.

Fashion and lifestyle e-tailer Myntra, which was acquired by Flipkart last year, offered the highest salary package of Rs. 15 lakh to a young talent at the MEC, Thrikkakara, according to the data provided by the representatives of the placement cells in both the institutions.

MEC upbeat

“Eighty eight per cent of the B. Tech students passing out this year at MEC received placement offers from various companies. About 50 companies visited the campus this recruitment season. The average salary package offered was Rs. 3.87 lakh a year. The top offshore annual pay of Rs. 33 lakh was offered by ESRI,” said V. K. Jayasree, faculty member and placement officer.

Cherian Roy, student chairman of the placement cell, pointed out that computer science students were placed in leading software companies including Yahoo and Oracle. “Students of the Electronics and Biomedical Engineering (EBE) course received offers from companies like TriMedx, Biosense, Transasia etc,” he said.

Of the 498 students eligible to participate in campus placement at Cusat, 327 have received placement offers from various recruiters. Thirty nine companies had visited the campus in this recruitment season. The average annual salary packet offered was Rs. 6.5 lakh. The top off-shore annual pay was Rs. 10 lakh.

Faculty members said that youngsters were showing a lot of interest in internet and e-commerce companies, mostly impressed by the high salaries on offer and opportunities to take up new challenges in their early phase of professional life. The boom in the sector has also prompted many to drop lucrative offers from the software companies this time.
